Matchbooks from Dubrow's

Purchased these off of eBay from two different sellers. The more faded one lists the Eastern Parkway (Brooklyn) and Lincoln Road (Miami) locations on them, and was dated as a 1940's matchbook. The third image is the inside of the more faded matchbook cover - war bonds! Proof that it it is from the 1940's. I love it. I especially love the use of "U'r" which allows it to spell out "DUBROW." The less faded one did not come with a date or have anything printed on the inside of the cover.

I lived on the corner of Avenue R and East 13th Street from April 1955 to April 1964. My fondest memories of Brooklyn are walking on the Highway. My mom always tells stories of Dubrow's and how wonderful it was eating there. How delicious the food was, and just what a great and comfortable place it was. Dubrow's was always the meeting place for me, my brother and our wonderful friends who lived on East 14th off of Kings Highway. It was always "I'll meet you in front of Dubrows" and invariably we would always eat there. Why I was an infant, my Mom and her best friend would park their infants asleep in the coach carriages in the big window on Kings Highway, go and get lunch and then sit in the window of Dubrows, having lunch with the carriages right in front of them in the window. I loved eating there when I got older and was always fascinated with the revolving door in the front. I remember there was also a rack of candy in the front where you paid, and I would always get Chuckles. Such unbelievably wonderful memories. I thought the site of Dubrows was gone forever until I found this blog. Thankyou forever for posting this. I am in Dubrows heaven.

Eve, thankyou so very much. I was actually talking about Dubrow's the other day to a Brooklyn friend, and she actually started to get very emotional when we were talking about all the good times on Kings Highway, and of course Dubrows.
Would it be possible to get a menu of what some of the dishes were. I love to cook and thought it would be fun to do an entire Dubrows menu for my Brooklyn buddies.
I am so very happy that I found this site, and thanks once again for your warm welcome.

Ellen,
Unfortunately we haven't been able to find a copy of the precise menu or recipes for Dubrow's dishes. If you poke around this blog long enough you'll see there are many Dubrow's dishes mentioned -- at this point your best bet is to pick one you recall and try making it yourself. If you come up with a recipe that seems like it comes close to the Dubrow's recipe, let us know! I'll post it here for others to enjoy.
